A Separate Peace

Antonio Martins transformed a wood-paneled rec room addition, which was awkwardly tacked on to the top floor of a 1913 Nob Hill home, into a glamorous dressing room and sitting area.

The sitting room, complete with fireplace and flat-screen tv, is adjacent to the owner’s dressing area and bathroom.

Martins turned the original built-in shelving into elegant concealed cabinets.

Making History

Architect Ken Linsteadt helped a busy family update their 1895 Victorian in Larkspur.

The kitchen and dining room at the back of the house were opened up to create one large, bright eat-in kitchen

The classic Victorian parlor and living room were opened up with larger archways and the ornate moldings were simplified throughout

A formerly inaccessible attic was transformed into a rustic master suite

Responsible Remodel

In Palo Alto, architect Gustave Carlson reinvented a midcentury home where the family had lived for 18 years.

Updating this classic post-and-beam home meant making it more energy efficient, so Carlson installed low-E glass in new windows positioned to take advantage of the sun for passive-solar heating.

The formerly cramped kitchen was relocated to an existing breezeway, which was opened up to connect the house and the garage.

The expansion of the master bathroom was partly the idea of the couple’s teenage son.
